Happy New Year!

It's been an "interesting" week.  My last post was on Monday and all was well until I had lunch following that post.  I had been to the dentist on an emergency visit two weeks earlier.  While eating lunch I felt something "pop" in my mouth and then ooze.   Ick.  Yuck. Gross.  I called the dentist and went in right away.  I had an infection/abscess up in the bone above a tooth what had had a root canal and a crown.  I was told I would need surgery for them to get it taken care of.  So he called the oral surgeon who said come in right away, it needs attention.  Because of my TKRs and back surgeries, I have to be careful about infections spreading to implants.  Monday afternoon was spent filling out paperwork and sitting in the dental chair.  I have quite a few sutures in my mouth that are bugging me now, but the pain is much better and the swelling is down.  I am taking a strong antibiotic.

I had had some things planned on my to-do list that just didn't happen while I was resting as instructed and holding an ice bag on my face.  So those things will be carrying over to the new year.  I am really glad I got the un-decorating done last weekend!

Golfer has had a relapse on the back pain and he is also resting and taking his meds.  Fortunately, we never go out for New Year's Eve, so we won't be missing anything.  We like to stay off the roads and just watch a movie and have snacks and try to stay awake until midnight to watch the ball drop in Times Square.  We're usually in bed by 12:05.  :)

It's been a gray and wet week.  Many puddles are in the yard.  I need to see the sun!  It is getting colder now and feels more like Winter.  Remember I said I am always ready for Spring on December 26th, so this business of getting colder is not especially great.  But God knows what He's doing, so I'll put on a sweatshirt and deal with it.

Stay safe!

Refreshing!

After several days of breaking the heat records for our area, it has started to cool off.  Hooray!  I turned the A/C off.  There's a breeze, the humidity is only 77% and it's now 50.  It's supposed to start raining later and be wet for a lot of the week.  I was out for a bit doing some things and had to laugh at all the people who obviously didn't pay attention before they jumped in their cars and headed out.  I saw a lot of shivering people in flip flops, tees, and shorts. :)

I have no big plans for today.  Did the usual morning things and went out to do a couple errands.  I plan to take it a little easier today.  I worked pretty much non-stop the last two days with the un-decorating and cleaning.  But everything is now done, put away and cleaned up.  I had planned to do the outside decorations today, but when I saw the forecast yesterday for the week, I decided it better get done.  There's nothing like trying to put away wet garland and lights and then having a rusty mess next year!  I was just heading outside when Golfer got home from the course yesterday and he helped and it was all done and put away in no time!

I hope everyone is well and content.  If you're traveling, be careful.  Stay safe!

May the Force of Christmas Be With You!

I hope you all have had a happy day!  I am worn out.  What with the cooking and cleaning and excitement and doing extra things, I am ready to have a shower, get in my pj's and watch a new movie!  We got several!  Unfortunately, Amazon hasn't been doing a very good job syncing our wish lists and Golfer and I got each other two of the same movies.  I just printed out the label and mailing instructions to return two of them.

Nurse J was on call today but they all got here for dinner about 1:00.  It was pretty good if I do say so.  :)  Then we opened gifts.  Cutie Girl opened one and liked it so much she didn't care to open the rest of hers.  BeyB helped her with that.  We had a nice afternoon just visiting and watching  Cutie Girl run laps through the house.

Bikini called us and they are doing well.  They had spent the afternoon with Brief's parents.  She said everyone was tired and too hot there, too.

Golfer and I have put our gifts away and he is probably out there napping in front of the TV now.  I wanted to post a couple pictures.  Otherwise, I'd be out there resting, too.

Star Wars was present in the theme this year!  Golfer got me a new small suitcase.  R2D2!

Golfer also got me BB8!  I still have much to learn to get to know her.  But she's fun to chase the furry kids with!  I operate her with an app on my phone.  He also got me the Star Wars salt and pepper shakers.  Very cute!  But couldn't use them because we didn't have any ground pepper in the house.  It's now on the grocery list and they will be on the table for the next dinner.

Bikini made Golfer a new tech bag for when we travel.  She had made a bag for me a couple years ago and we have shared it when we travel.  It gets so full, it's too heavy by the time we  load in our tablets, all the chargers, our books and glasses, etc.  So now we each have one!  And again... Star Wars!  The black and white part holds the chargers.

Santa came for the furry kids, too. Cinder was pretty protective of her stocking!

Cecil and Finnigan were tired out.

It's been a good day.  Lots of memories, old and new.  Now I need to go fix a couple ham sandwiches and then hit the shower.  Tomorrow is a busy day!  The un-decorating will begin!!  Followed by cleaning.

Stay safe!

Merry Christmas!

I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe!

Golfer and I are doing well.  It's too warm for Christmas, in my opinion.  74 degrees and 80% humidity the last I looked.  I like snow for Christmas and am fine with Winter weather for the holiday.  Of course, by December 26th I am ready for Spring.  :)  I think things are backwards this year.

Golfer would be out on the course but it has been raining for a couple days and with the warm temperatures, there's a lot of mud.  Plus the course closes early today.  But he's hoping for Saturday!

I've been doing some things around the house and doing some food prep for tomorrow.  All is well.

Have a Wonderful Christmas!  And stay safe!

And smile!

One More Nativity Set

This is the Nativity that all the grandchildren have played with. It's seventeen years old. I don't know if Fisher Price still makes these. You push the angel at the top to make the star light up.

Stay safe!  Have a wonderful, Blessed Christmas!

The Reason

I don't post on Facebook very often, but have made a couple posts about favorite Christmas movies lately.  So if you "do" Facebook, this post will be familiar.  Lest anyone think that our Christmas Season is focused only on entertainment and funny movies, here are some pictures of our Nativity "sets". I've collected them over the years. It actually got to the point where storage was an issue and we didn't have the room to set them all out every year. So over the past few years I've shared some with Jacquie and Pam and friends. We have a couple that are not out this year. One is so large that there just isn't a convenient place to set it up, especially with a little two-year-old getting excited and four furry kids enjoying the holiday decorations. :)  There are priorities you know.

A couple are from Germany.  The Hummel one on the chest that was Mom's is my favorite.

Here are some of our other ones.

If you're out doing last minute shopping, be careful.  It's finally gotten cold here.  It's sunny today and Golfer is out on the course, seeing if his back is going to cooperate.  :)   I'm all ready to watch Cutie Girl while the rest of Jacquie's family sees "Star Wars"!

Stay safe!

Hummity!

In the words of the XM people..."Hummity, hummity, bah!  Hummity, hummity,  bug!   (just kidding)  All is well here.

We've sort of had a heat wave and everyone is running around in tee shirts, some in shorts, and no jackets.  It is starting to cool off a little.  I hope so.  I really don't want to turn the A/C back on in the middle of December.

Golfer's back is slowly getting better.  He has missed playing golf, but has been taking care of himself and following doctor's instructions.  I'm hoping this might help:

Lazy-Boy finally delivered today.  It isn't really a Christmas gift, but I stuck a bow on it anyway for the picture.  :)

I had to have an unscheduled dentist appointment yesterday.  I had pain on the upper right side of my mouth and on my face.  Dr. Freeman took some x-rays, and did a lot of poking and tapping.  Didn't find anything wrong with any of my teeth, and no sign of infection.  He thought it was too much pressure and some realignment was needed.  So he did a little sanding and filing and said we'd give it forty-eight hours.  If it isn't getting better or it gets worse, then I have to see a dental surgeon for some kind of procedure.  I'm hoping what he did fixes it.  He said I could have bitten or chewed something too hard and it caused irritation and inflammation around the nerves in that area.  It seems a little better today, but I know it's still there.  Since I'm supposed to be careful, I guess I have to stay away from Bikini's wonderful peanut brittle for a while.

So, here we are.  Christmas is rapidly approaching.  Life is good.  Stay safe!

Wednesday, December 9, 2015

Hello!

I hope your Christmas preparations are coming along and everyone is happy and healthy.  This can be an emotional time of year for some. Even I have some "feels" this time of year (as Bikini would call it).  But all is well and all is good.

I've been taking care of some follow-up on some minor issues.  Things like getting a prescription refilled when the doctor's office wouldn't respond to Express Scripts or my messages.  And getting a replacement part for my clock.  And being here for the Culligan man to come to do the annual service call on the water filtration system.

The decorating is done, and the cards done and mailed.  Shopping is done, but a few things still have to be delivered and wrapped.  I have not baked anything yet and plan to do that soon.

Golfer's back has been bothering him a little, but he's been taking care of himself and is feeling better.  It's sunny and in the 50's today and he is out on the golf course.  :)

Our yard work is pretty much all caught up.  The mower went in for a tune-up and is now back in the shed and ready for Spring.

We went to see "Mockingjay 2" and enjoyed it.  It was our kind of movie environment - maybe six other people in the theater!

Bikini's family is passing around a cold or crud of some kind.  She has it now, but basically, they are all okay.

Nurse J is doing okay.  Cutie Girl had another eye appointment and will be having eye surgery in February to hopefully correct the tracking issues she has.  BeyB is just getting over an ear infection.

With the state of the world, it is sometimes hard to stay positive and not sink into a worried state of despair.  I've been thinking about everything that's been going on.  Is it possible that there's always been such violence and it's just more obvious now because the world is so connected and we are blasted with the news 24/7 on every device?  I really don't think the President's miserable speech the other night made anyone feel any better.  But that's another story and worry and nothing that I can fix.

So.  All is well.  Stay safe.

Hooray! They Fixed It!

I followed the comments and posts for the blog and I was not the only person to have trouble posting pictures recently.  Last night I got an email saying they were in the process of fixing the problem.  Yay!

So here are some pictures of our decorating work.
Dining room tree; all in red, silver, and gold

Our "antique" Coca Cola Santa.  Mom always had him out when I was a little girl.  We set him out every year.

Our original elves.  Modern day elves get into a lot of mischief sometimes from what I hear.  But ours sit nicely and behave themselves as they watch over our tree in the living room.

One of two new ornaments this year.  This one is from Key West's Hemingway House.

Other new ornament.  This one is from The Varsity, in Atlanta, GA, where we always stop for hot dogs!
Finished living room tree.  Bikini made the quilted tree skirt.

Done!

The decorating is officially declared finished!  As soon as I finished my breakfast and reading the paper this morning, I got busy.  Great plan.  Did not go quite as I had thought.

There was a delay while I went out to the garage to look for the electrical tape.  While hanging ornaments on the bottom of the tree I found a pre-wired tree light that was not lit.  Upon inspection I discovered the wires had been chewed clear through.  Lucky for the furry kids, the lights all still worked.  Honestly, I don't know if this happened in the last two days or if it happened last year and we just didn't see it.  Either way, all is well, the furry kids are safe and no one was put into permanent time out.  I just taped the wires and light and tucked it away in the branches.

Then there was a delay while I cleaned up a broken ornament - one of the really old ones.  And on it went; eventually I got done.  Then I started putting the boxes away and started the last of the cleaning.

Sooooo, here are some pictures!. . . . . . . . .   Well, maybe not.  Seems that Google and Blogger are having some issues.  Boo!  Hiss!  I'll check later to see if they have fixed the problem.

Stay safe!

AAAARRRGGHHH! HUMBUG!

I am normally in pretty good spirits, especially this time of year.  Decorating this year has had some challenges.  First of all was decorating outside yesterday in the damp weather.  BTW - it's still dark and wet here today.

This morning after breakfast and reading the paper, I started on the tree in the dining room.  This is the one that is visible from the street.  Looks pretty.  That went well.  Then I did some cleaning.  That took a while.  Everything was done except the living room.

After lunch I had to go out to do a couple errands.  They went fine, but traffic was the pits.  I don't know what was going on at Walmart today, but there were some crazy people around the store.  And traffic backed up.  I thought to myself, "gee, I'm glad I'm not going in there".  Remember those words.

So I got home, and started on the living room tree.  Got the angel wired on the top.  I have to do that first or I can't reach her without knocking ornaments off.  Then I did the  silver garland.  Then I got to the extra string of lights that we use so we can plug in our Hallmark Star Trek ornaments.  #!%&^**!!  lights did not work.  I messed with it for about half an hour then tossed them down and gave up on them.  I gathered up my things and headed out.  Guess where??  Walmart!!  Still crazy.  People were running through stop signs and acting ugly.  I found a place to park and went in and bought two sets of lights.  I avoided the fights over carts.  Came home and tested them and they all worked.

Had to take a break to start a pot of chili for supper, then back to the tree.  Put the lights on.  Started to hang the ornaments.  Most either won't plug in, even with the adapters, or they won't work if they do plug in.  While doing some of them, the whole string of lights would go out.  So I worked like that for quite a while until I broke down in tears.  Golfer came to check on me.  After making sure I was okay, his advice was "well, they are old ornaments".  Very true!

So most of the ornaments are not plugged in but are hanging on the tree.  And when it is time in a month to un-decorate, I am getting my wire cutters and snipping all those useless things off the ornaments.  (I might tackle that before then) In the future the ornaments will still be on our tree, but will be unplugged.  I can't stand the aggravation.  As a side note, the new ornaments they are selling now all come with little batteries and do not have to be plugged in.

I was exhausted and frustrated and the tree will be finished tomorrow.

I needed to call HP Ink and get some mailers for recycling our empty ink cartridges.  We have the deal where our printer talks to their computer and they know when to send us more ink.  The last two shipments have not had the mailers.  I tried to handle the issue online and ended up "chatting" with someone named Praveen.  I'll be nice and just say she was totally useless and I disconnected our chat.  Then I called their support number and talked to Stephan and he was most helpful and sounded like he might have been in the USA, and our mailers on on the way.  If Praveen had known what kind of day it had been here, she wouldn't have asked such stupid questions.

When I get the tree finished and living room cleaned up I'll take some pictures.  Stay safe!

We're Home!

The trip home was okay except for a little rain, until we got into Virginia.  Then we had some traffic issues, but eventually got here.

We got everything unloaded and brought in, then unpacked and put away.  Been working pretty much non-stop today.  The bed has been changed, bathrooms cleaned, all the laundry done.  We did a couple errands this morning.  Then the Christmas decorating got started!  Even though it's been raining all day and cool and gray, I went ahead and decorated outside.  Most of that work was from the porch, so not too bad.  Golfer came out and helped put our wooden snowman out and the little sleigh, and hung the wreathes.

I hauled all the boxes out of the library closet and started sorting through them.  We got the trees set up, but not decorated.  That's tomorrow's job.  The furry kids are all tired out from helping with everything!

The girls and families are all well and busy.  Nurse J got stuck in traffic coming back from Roanoke.  Finally she just had to pull off and get a hotel room last night.  There were lanes closed and back-ups from the really bad bus accident on the interstate.

One highlighted news story this morning was the end of hurricane season.  That's fine to make note of it, but I've always thought that if God wants it to storm, it's going to storm.  He doesn't consult a calendar.

So, all is well.  Stay safe.  More later.

Hello from Georgia!

We're  having a great visit with Bikini, Brief and the kids!   The furry kids have been particularly attentive!

Thanksgiving dinner was delicious.  Bikini did a great job.  Here she is making "Thanksgiving peanut brittle".  :)

And here I am helping a little.

We went over to see Brief's family and had another dessert later in the afternoon.  Yum!  And then on the way back to the house we detoured by Toys r Us so Bikini and Brief could get the kids new bikes.  Bloomer had outgrown hers and Boxer's had been stolen from their driveway recently.  Conveniently there was a limited time sale that was worth the trip.  Crowded, but successful.  Golfer and I waited in our car.  :)  That has been the only shopping.  We've stayed away from the crowds.

We did venture out this morning to see the new Good Mews Cat Shelter.  It is lovely and there are many wonderful kitties waiting for their forever homes.  The new shelter has large sunny windows and plenty of places for the kitties to sit in the sun.

Right now there is some outside work happening and Christmas decorations being put up.  Also some quilting for a project going on.  I decided after emptying the dishwasher that it was a perfect time for a blog post.

Stay safe!

Some Important Words

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language.. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'

BRRRRR!

We started out this morning at almost 60 degrees and rainy.  The wind has picked up, the rain has come down, and the temperature has dropped.  Right now it is 44.

And because this has not been a good day for doing yard work, cleaning up leaves, or playing golf, we went to a movie.  We rarely go on a weekend.  We like to be in an un-crowded theater.  :)  But "Spectre" has been out for a couple weeks and we figured most people would be seeing the final Hunger Games movie.  We were right.  "Spectre" was excellent!  I already want to see it again.  It will be on one of our wish lists soon!

It had been a little while since we had been to a movie.  Today we discovered that they now serve beer at the concession stand!  Go figure!  I supposed it's nice to offer the choice, but I don't really see the need.  Our popcorn and Cokes were very good.  I used the AARP card for the special and
Golfer used the free popcorn ticket he got today.  :)

Nurse J is doing okay.  She's very tired and having some occasional nausea; and lots of doctors' appointments and testing.  So far, so good.  Another happy blessing from God.  He has a plan.

We will be seeing Bikini for Thanksgiving and we're looking forward to spending time with them.  Boxer and Bloomer have probably grown a foot since we last saw them!  She has told us we get to help her decorate while we're there.  :)

Life is good.  Stay safe!

Been Busy!

Hey, all!

It's been busy around here!  The landscaping work is all finished.  Looks good, and will look even better when the grass comes up in the bare spots that are now covered in compost.  Golfer and I worked outside all day yesterday.  We had to clean up bits of little limbs, cut roots that got left, and a bazillion leaves.  Then Golfer mowed and trimmed.  I scrubbed the deck and furniture.  Besides the mud that got tracked onto the deck during the work, some visiting birds left some deposits.  I don't know what they had been eating, but their poo did not just hose off!  I also cleaned up the porch and walk out front.  I recommend the Exterior Windex that you connect to a hose.  Works very well for all sorts of things.  We got a lot done and we were both tired.  I will try to get a better picture later.

Saturday I went with Nurse J and the girls to the annual Smithfield Marketplace.  First time we had gone to that.  It was very nice, but too many people and too crowded for us.  But the weather was good and we had a nice time.  The fresh air and sunshine, and all the walking - or riding in a stroller - wore the girls out!

Sunday Golfer and I went with Nurse J and BeyB to Ferguson Center to see "White Christmas".  It was a little different from the movie we watch every Christmas Eve, but it was very good.

I'm getting ready to head out to do a few errands now.  Stay safe!

The Work Has Begun!

Hooray!  The landscaper and workers appeared this morning about 7:45 and got right to work.  Evidently, the whole "wait for things to dry out" plan is out the window.  Today is sunny with a little breeze and it's in the mid-60's.  But it is still pretty wet out in the yard.

I have adopted the "if they mess something else up, they can fix it before they get paid" line of thinking, and am trying not to worry about any of it.

For a while they had a very large remote controlled stump grinder out there, just like we have seen on HGTV!  The furry kids were not amused though and if looks could kill.........  They did  not like the noise and strangers in our yard.

I was asked a little bit ago what we wanted to do about the leaves.  I very nicely said that we had been keeping them cleaned up ever since we thought the work was going to start about a month ago, but it had been too wet recently for us to get out and do any clean-up.  If they didn't want to clean them up, just blow them out onto the grass and we'd try to get them later.  We can't do anything out there now without getting in their way.

Our sprinkler system set-up is not what the landscaper expected and the sprinkler guy will be coming to do some work soon.   There has to be some adjusting of locations and such to have everything covered.   Conveniently, they work together a lot I'm told.  And also, they know and work with our new yard guy.  So pretty soon our yard ought to be looking great again!!

In other news... all the usual daily chores and things have been getting done.  Trips to the "Y" have been made.  Golf has been played.  Christmas cards have been started. Good books have been read.  Many shows have been watched.  Oh, BTW, we found another new show we like!  Try "Agent X" if you get a chance.  It's on TNT.

Better go now, the dryer just beeped.  Stay safe!

A Laugh!

I don't know where Golfer found this, but it made me laugh!

Here is a turkey recipe that includes the use of uncooked popcorn as a stuffing ingredient -- imagine that!  When I found this recipe, I thought it was perfect for people like me, who just are not sure how to tell when the turkey is thoroughly cooked, but not dried out.  Give this a try.

8 - 15 lb. Turkey

1 cup melted butter

1 cup stuffing (Pepperidge Farm is Good)

1 cup un-popped popcorn (ORVILLE REDENBACHER'S LOW FAT IS BEST)

Salt/pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Brush turkey well with melted butter, salt, and pepper.

Fill cavity with stuffing and popcorn.

Place in baking pan - making sure the neck end is toward the front of the oven, not the back.

After about 4 hours listen for the popping sounds.

When the turkey's a** blows the oven door open and the bird flies across the room.... it's done.
Stay safe!

Just Saying HI!

Updates:

Landscaping project:  Nothing being done yet.  See following weather update.

Weather:  Yesterday was in mid-80's and muggy.  When we got up this morning it was already in 70's with 87% humidity.  Did not feel like November.  As I'm writing, a front is coming through.  It is raining again.  Temperatures are falling.  Supposed to be in 50's tomorrow and sunny.  But the ground is still wet and soft.

Neighbors:  There is work being done next door in the house that has been vacant for months and months.  So glad someone is working over there!  But it doesn't help us any that they are power washing the side of the house where we want our side yard to dry out.

Leaves:  The leaves were all cleaned up a few days ago and looking out now you can't tell we did anything at all.  That's just the way it is.  :)

Golfer and I are doing well.  I hope he and the other guys got their round in before the rain started.

We've been doing a few small cleaning out projects around here.  There's always something that needs to be done.  Yesterday I went to the laundromat to wash our king size quilt.  When I changed the bed I switched to our holiday quilt that Bikini made for us a few years ago.  Here's a picture of Cinder and Angus enjoying being first to get on it!  Actually Cinder was first "on".  Angus is the lump under the quilt.  :)  I think Cinder is contemplating sitting on him.

All is well, life is good.  Stay safe!

Sigh................

Well, the long-waited-for landscaping work and repair in the yard has not started.  Rain started; but no work.  He came by early Monday morning to talk to us and look at the yard again.  Today is sunny and warm, no rain.  If it dries out enough, work might start by the end of the week.  But more rain is predicted for Thursday and some on the weekend.  Really, what do the forecasters know?!? So it's pretty much "wait and see".  A major point of concern is how to get the heavy equipment to the back of the yard without tearing up the side yard and causing more damage.  I am confident that he is going to be careful.  I just want this all done.

But, that's how it is.  I have been busy with the usual things around here that need doing every day.  And I've done a little extra cleaning on bigger projects.  I spent several hours concerning Christmas, doing an inventory of our Christmas shopping so far.  And then, since I had everything pulled out of the closet, I decided to just go ahead and wrap things.  Then I made a new list for the remaining items we still need to get.  I also worked on our address database in preparation for doing cards in the near future.

My latest project is cleaning out our files.  I usually do that the end of December, but there have been some changes made in some things and updates and new labels were needed.   Plus, some were quite full.  So I've been sorting and shredding.

The temperatures have been back and forth.  A couple days are really cool, then a couple warm.  The leaves are really falling down quickly now.  I'm not seeing the vibrant colors that I've seen some years, but they are still pretty.  If only they would rake and bag themselves!

So.  Life goes on.  Life is good.  I'm going back to the shredding now.  Stay safe!

P.S.  Did you go vote????

Really, People?!?!

I always look through the coupons that come with the Sunday paper.  I came across this.  Really??? Was there a huge need for this product???  Who thinks of these things???

I don't know about  you, but when I want a snack, Spam certainly isn't the first thing to come into my mind.

I remember Spam from my childhood.  Mom and Granma both liked to fry it.  Spam and eggs for breakfast, usually with something like fried mush, or as a side to Maypo or something.  There would also be Spam hash, Spam sandwiches, and other delicacies.  It was never one of my favorites.  Have not had any in many, many years.  And I don't plan to try snacking on any in the near future!

Final Halloween Post :)

November 1st.  The Halloween decorations are about to be packed away.  But first, some pictures!

Boxer and Bloomer participating in pre-Halloween pumpkin gutting!

Cutie Girl getting ready, and not quite understanding the whole Trick-or-Treat thing yet.

And finally, BeyB.  Her costume was "code 404, not found".

And now it's on to Thanksgiving!  Stay safe!

OOH! It's Summer Again!

After a couple cool, dark, wet days, today has been sunny and about 80.  We turned the heat off and opened the windows.  Everyone is happy.  I know it won't last, but it's nice while it's here.

Golfer had a follow-up appointment with the neurologist.  All is well, go back in a year.  So that's good.

I did some cleaning and laundry this morning.  And I did a little clean-up outside.  However, you can not tell that I did.  The breeze is moving the falling leaves around pretty well and the deck and patio are now covered again, as is the front.  Sigh.

I had a pile of "desk stuff" to do and also needed to pay bills.  That all got done.

And then I started reading a new book, The Solomon Curse.  It's very good.  Golfer recently read it and he also liked it.  I was going to start it a few days ago, but needed to catch up on the magazine pile.  :)   I'd still be reading right now, but it's time to fix supper.  All in all, it's been a good day.

Stay safe!

Remembering Fall in Ohio

I grew up in Navarre, a small town in Ohio.  In my memories, Fall was always sunny, cool and crisp, with the wonderful colors and smell of the changing and drying leaves.  We’d sort through them and pick the prettiest and then have a project of dipping them in melted wax to preserve them.  Granma would send Granpa out to hunt for branches of bittersweet with its lovely little orange berries so she could decorate the house.  This was back when you could drive along a country road, see something you wanted to pick and carefully just do it.  People weren’t so fussy in our area about trespassers.  I guess since it was a small rural area, everyone pretty much knew everyone else and it was okay.  That was how Granpa used to go pick blackberries for Granma to make jam, too.
Don't get me wrong, there were some properties that everyone knew you shouldn't go onto, as the owner might be really particular about his yard or his fields.  So everyone  respected that and stayed off.
When the prettiness of the leaves wore off and they were on the ground, they’d be raked to the curb and any kids around could jump in them and play with the pile.  Then we’d help rake them back together and we’d have a big fire to burn them.  I’m sure I inhaled more smoke than I should have.  I’m also sure it wasn’t good for the environment.  But is filling large plastic bags and loading up the dump sites that good for the environment now?
I remember festivals of various sorts.  The church ladies always had a Fall bazaar and luncheon on election day.  And there would be the big Swiss Festival in Sugarcreek.  That was fun – fresh, crisp apples, wonderful large chunks of fresh cheese, home grown vegetables and fruits, music, and crafts.   And always fresh apple cider and powdered doughnuts!
Halloween was big deal back then.  Navarre always had a Halloween parade through town that ended up in the school gym.  There would be costume judging and refreshments (apple cider and doughnuts!)  My Mom always loved Halloween and would make us costumes.  One year I was Robin Hood and she was Maid Marian.  Another year she was Granny and I was Little Red Riding Hood.  My favorite was the year she was Aunt Jemima and I was the pancake.  I know, I know, that is politically incorrect now.  But back then we were just simply a very popular syrup commercial couple!
On Trick or Treat night the kids were free to walk all over town.  Back then we could do that without fearing for our lives.  We’d get apples, homemade cookies and popcorn balls, and even sometimes a nickel!  And also candy!  This was before you had to worry that some deranged awful person put something into the candy or treats.  The only way you got sick from your treats is if you ate too many at once.
I’m not sure why we did the dried corn throwing.  But as we’d walk around from house to house the corn got tossed. It made a great noise! I’m sure the birds and squirrels and other critters were happy about it.  The next day some of us would help sweep it up.
I never understood the whole soaping windows thing back then either.  I never did that, but I did get asked to help scrub Granma’s windows if someone messed them up. She had a good attitude and said it just made her windows cleaner.  Mom and I lived in a second floor apartment, so we didn't have to worry about that.
There was never any of this scheduling of Trick or Treat times either.  Now it can be on different days, or in the afternoon.  Back then, when it got dark on Halloween night, the kids came out. It did not matter if it was really cold, or raining, or snowing.  You could go around until you wore yourself out, your neighbors ran out of treats, or your Mom called you in.
But, things have changed.  I used to really enjoy Halloween and would decorate and carve a pumpkin, and get lots of candy to pass out.  But, politeness and consideration has gone out of the holiday now.  A couple years ago, the local paper printed a list of where the best neighborhoods were for trick or treating.  Our neighborhood was at the top of the list.  Since then, every year there are cars and vans full of kids being dropped off at the entrance to the community.  Large kids who are over the age limit, and kids who aren’t even in costume.  Kids who don’t know how to say please or thank you.  Kids who stomp on your landscaping.  The reporter should never have written that article, but I blame the parents.  The lack of manners and driving them in is their fault.  So I no longer participate.  The new tradition is dinner out after seeing our grandchildren in costume.  And we always get the grand-kids a little something as a treat.  So, however you celebrate, whether you do or not, have a good evening.  I will be enjoying happy memories of what used to be.

Stay safe!

Life Is Moving Along

Our days are filled with all the usual daily chores and duties, and we seem to keep busy. There are trips to the "Y" and Golfer gets some rounds in.   As for me, the "Fall" cleaning is under control and pretty much done.  It won't be too long before another extra good cleaning before Christmas decorations come out!  Time seems to move too fast sometimes.

Our yard work has been at a minimum lately since we've been waiting for seeds to sprout and grow.  And since there has been more watering because of that, the ground has been too squishy to really walk around out there too much.  I did do a little clean-up on the weekend.  There were a couple weeds shouting at me every time I looked out the window and they had to go!  The long awaited drainage repair and landscaping in the back corner of the yard is scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday and I will be glad when it is over and done.  I'm hoping that that work does not mess up the new grass in other areas.

Bikini is in Las Vegas for a work conference.  She says it's a good time since there's a bull riders convention going on now also.  :)

Nurse J went to her work conference in Atlantic City recently, but missed most of it due to a trip to the ER for kidney stones.  She is better.

I've been working on Christmas shopping and such.  While I was out doing errands recently I was in Lowes.  If Golfer and I were into the big blow-up decorations for the yard, I found the one we would have to get - - - -  R2D2 and C3P0 in Christmas hats with a pretty tree!  I find it very unsettling to go into stores and have Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas items all on display together.

I just finished reading John Scalzi's The End of All Things.  It is the latest in the Old Man's War series and was very good.  Now I'm catching up on magazines.  And then I'll start Clive Cussler's  Solomon's Curse.

We've been having our typical Virginia Fall weather - a few days warm and then a few cold and back and forth.  Today is cool, dark, and cloudy and there is supposed to rain later.  The furry kids have gone into cold weather mode and frequently burrow under the quilts, or hunker down in a warm chair.  Here is Finnigan, our little fur ball!  He had everything all tucked in!

It's time for me to go check on the golf hats I am washing.  More later!  Stay safe!

Just Sharing Some Smiles

I mentioned in a previous post about going along for Cutie Girl's picture session.  Here's how it went:

She had been all seated and arranged but that did not last long.

Then there was some rearranging to do.

And here she is looking windblown in Fall breezes and the kitty wearing the hat!
Everyone had fun and it was a good morning!

Stay safe and have a fun Halloween!

And Another Beautiful Fall Day

It was in the 40's here this morning.  We have not turned the heat on yet.  All that insulation we had done a few years ago is still doing its thing up in the attic and the house has stayed comfortable so far.  But we may have to turn the heat on this weekend as it is supposed to get even cooler.  It stayed in the 60's today and sunny, with a breeze.

Golfer and I just returned from a movie.  We saw "The Martian" and it was really good.  I think it's one for my wish list!

As we were getting tickets, our friends L & G came in, too.  They were seeing a different movie but we got to visit a bit before we went into our movies.  They are still very stressed with their repair work and some upgrades in the kitchen going on.  Said there were no workers there today, so they left the house for a movie.

I think we're going to try one of the new places in Tech Center for dinner.  Will have to see how crowded it is.

Has anyone else heard about the pumpkin shortage nation-wide?  Since this is our year to go to Bikini's for Thanksgiving, I won't need any.  But the news reports around here are saying to get your canned pumpkin now if you want any.

I hope everyone is well and happy.  Stay safe!

Another Beautiful Day!

The windows are open, the sun is shining, life is good!

The new yard guys called yesterday about noon to say they would be here today.  Golfer cut the grass low as instructed yesterday afternoon and marked all the sprinkler heads.  The guys - four of them - showed up a little before 10:00 this morning.  They are done and gone now.  They did a more extensive aeration that we ever had with the old company.  And they left a sheet of instructions and a large bag of grass seed for any problem areas.  They will return in a few weeks for the next treatment.

Golfer and I went and got our flu shots yesterday afternoon.  Have you gotten yours yet????

I've done some cleaning this morning and will do a load of laundry when Golfer returns from the "Y" and driving range.

Angus is happy.  One of my chores today was cleaning out under the stove, the refrigerator, washer and dryer.  He loves shoving his favorite toys under those places and then sits there all sad in front of them because he can't get his toys.  I found six this morning.  One is already under the linen closet door!

I need to take inventory of our Christmas shopping and see what else I need to look for.  The gifts for Bikini's family need to be ready for our Thanksgiving trip, in case you're wondering why so early.  But I do like to get things ready early so I don't have to rush around in the crowds closer to Christmas.

Stay safe!

Smile!

I mentioned in an earlier post that I went with Nurse J to have Cutie Girl's pictures taken.  She did not get them yet, but this is a copy of one posted on the photographer's website, Purple Owl Photography.

What a sweetie!

Fall!

The last couple days have finally felt like Fall is here.  It was in the low 50's last night.  Today it's about 70 and sunny.  The windows are open.  We still have our Encore azaleas blooming and our potted geraniums, too.  Very pretty!

I don't have any potted plants inside because of the furry kids.  And I really enjoy the tropical flower arrangement I made, so I just put the Fall decorations around it.  The Halloween pumpkins on the mantle will get swapped out with the Thanksgiving figures after Halloween.  The ceramic pumpkins will stay there through Thanksgiving.

And these two are always good for a smile!  That's Finnigan on top and Angus on the shelf.  There was some "tag, you're it" going on.  :)

Life is good!  Stay safe!

Gray, Windy, and Rainy, Again

Hey, all!

I was supposed to be going to yard sales with Nurse J this morning.  But as I have mentioned, it is gray and raining again.  Kiln Creek has Community yard sales twice a year.  Fall one was supposed to have been last Saturday and was postponed to today because of the weather last week.  Some folks are still out there with their things set up, but it is not a very comfortable day for yard sale shopping.  Nurse J and I are not going.

We are going to get Cutie Girl's Halloween pictures done later today!

Golfer is watching a  movie since he doesn't like to play golf in the rain any more than I like to shop in it!  His movie watching got off to a slow start due to the DVD player not having a signal.  He pulled the TV stand out and checked all the wires and cables.  Didn't find anything wrong anywhere, but it worked just fine when he put everything back and tried again.  I suspect that it might have had something to do with me wrestling Cecil out from behind there yesterday to do his grooming.

Cecil was very good about it, just hates the whole idea of one of us picking him up.  So after I chase him from his usual hiding places, he likes to go behind the entertainment center.  Not very convenient, but not impossible.  Like I've said before, he's a very sweet cat and it is very fortunate that we adopted him years ago.  After I got his grooming all done and we both hugged on him a while, I did the other three without any major issues.    So that's done for another couple weeks.  Whew!

I have been busy sorting things out from my Christmas shopping.  That is going well and the next shopping trip will not take as long.  I'm looking forward to next weekend and Hallmark's BOGO sale!

Speaking of Hallmark - - - I am a little annoyed with them about their ornaments.  Golfer and I collect the Star Trek ornaments.  I think they need to re-issue all the old ones and have them battery powered like the newer ornaments.  We had to get the special adapters a few years ago so we could connect the older ornaments to the newer lights on the tree. And even with those, some of them don't work.  And adjust their prices!  I know inflation, production costs, etc. etc. but come on!  $30 - $40 for a little ornament??  That used to be $10 or $12??

I hope everyone is well and content.  Stay safe!

Busy, Busy!

Hey, everyone!

We've been busy around here.  The weather is great and things are drying out.  The golf courses are open for business again and the guys have been out to play.   It's in the mid-70's and sunny today, the windows are open, life is good!

I started on the yard clean-up yesterday.  Lots and lots of small branches, limbs, twigs, leaves, pine cones, Ginkgo balls, etc.  I got quite a bit done.  Golfer finished it up today before he mowed the grass.  The new guys come next week to aerate and do their yard applications.  I think it's fertilizer and seed.  Golfer will have to mow again really short, and then mark all the sprinkler heads.

I did all the usual everyday stuff around here and then went Christmas shopping!  I made quite a dent in the list.  I've been having some issues with Amazon though.  Our family keeps Amazon wish lists and Amazon is not keeping the lists all up to date.  Depending on where you are viewing the lists and who has signed in, different things are showing up.  And purchased items are not being removed from the lists.  So there is some confusion.  But I think I have things sorted out.  I was going to go back to the PX anyway, so I will just be returning two items that were already purchased.

All the years I was working, I always liked to go Christmas shopping on Columbus Day.  Now I can pretty much shop whenever I want.  But honestly, I rather like shopping online!  No crowds or people!  But I had a large gift card to use, so I geared up and went out today.

Golfer is watching golf on TV right now.  Dinner is in the oven.  I am off to round up the furry kids and clip some nails.

Stay safe!

Where Are My Sunglasses???

Hooray!  Today is beautiful!  The sky is blue with a few white fluffy clouds.  The sun is shining brightly.  The temperature is in the 60's and the windows are open!  The furry kids are happy!  Things are looking up.  As I mentioned, the forecast for the projected rainfall was up to twelve inches.  We got about four inches right around us, but other areas got more.

We have friends in South Carolina who have had it much worse.  One couple in Murrels Inlet said they had about seventeen inches the last we heard from them.  They were "marooned" in their house for a while.  Their neighborhood has small ponds and lakes like we have here and they just could not hold all the water.  It ran out into the streets and up into yards.  She sent us this picture of their street.

Another couple in Summerville had about eighteen inches at last count.  They hadn't had flooding in their immediate neighborhood, but he said that the rain was driving the snakes out of hiding and several people had been bitten by copperheads.  ICK.

So, all in all, we're very lucky.  Probably by tomorrow our yard will be dry enough for us to walk on and we can start some clean-up.  Large bags and my long-handled grabbers will be in use!  We have to get it cleaned up so Golfer can mow.  The new yard company wants to come next week and aerate. We heard from the landscaper and he wants to start work next week on the drainage problem and repairs in the back yard.  And put down some new cedar mulch!

I have finished up most of my "storm projects".  Things are under control.  BeyB got her braces off!  Her teeth are beautiful, but she says they "feel funny".

Life is good.  Stay safe!

Day Whatever. Still Raining. Still Windy.

We're still here.  It is still raining, still windy and still gray.  The rain varies from light to heavy.  I have not been able to find a total count on the rainfall so far.  I suspect the weather forecasters have given up and gone into hiding at this point.  Although there are quite a few of them being shown on TV updates standing out in flood water.  They're saying profound things like, "It's really wet out here, folks!".  I'm sorry, if you don't already know that, you're pretty un-smart.  (I try not to call anyone dumb or stupid.  That gets really, really hard sometimes.)  :)

The winds are heavy today and up to 40 mph.  There will be some major yard clean-up going on around here when the rain is finished and things dry out enough for us to actually walk out in the yard.  It's going to be a big bags and long-handled grabbers kind of project.

Even though Joaquin is out over the ocean, he's causing many problems.   The aforementioned wind, high waves and surf.  All causing tidal flooding and beach erosion.  Since the ground is saturated, there is nowhere for the water to go and other waterways are flooding.  The "count" for that is at least as high as with "Sandy" a few years ago.

I've been productive today.  All the usual "stuff" was done and I got all the laundry done, too.  Also  cleaned the floors.  Golfer had three pairs of slacks that needed hemming and I got those marked and done.  Cleaned up the kitchen a couple times.  It's almost time to mess it up again fixing supper.

The Sunday paper was totally soggy and worthless this morning.  They were supposed to deliver another one, but nothing yet.  I just checked their automated system and that said it will come tomorrow morning.  We'll see how that works out.  It's supposed to still be raining.

So that's how it is.  Thank goodness there are some new shows on tonight!

Stay safe!

Another Update

It's raining and windy, sometimes more than others.  But I recently looked out and it seemed like it was raining sideways.

I had to venture out for a doctor's appointment this morning.  It took longer than I expected due to lab work and everyone and everything being slow, traffic included.  However, the Rheumatology doctor took plenty of time to discuss all my concerns; the lab was backed up.

As you could expect with all this rain, there were huge puddles everywhere, all the ponds and lakes that I passed were full to their tops.  There was standing water on the roads in places.  In spite of a raincoat, rain hat, and umbrella, the wind and rain made me wet!

I got there and back home safe and sound.  Golfer and I have been catching up on some of our recorded shows.  We decided not to go back out into the weather.  As far as our immediate area, we are okay.  There are small lakes near us, but I don't think we are in any danger of flood water at this time.

Southside is a different matter.  Anywhere close to the water is having problems.  There is beach erosion threatening many areas.

I got this picture from an online news report.

Weather Update

This picture sums it up!  This is from the Weather Kitty app on my phone.  This is from yesterday afternoon.  This morning it is raining more seriously.

Joaquin is now predicted to stay out over the ocean, unless there are drastic changes.  But the coastal storm is dumping lots of rain and bringing wind.  There have been some closings, and there is already some flooding in some areas.  Beach erosion is a concern.  The ground is saturated and the water has nowhere to go.

Golfer and I are doing well.

Stay safe!

Welcome to October! And Weather!

I spent yesterday doing some storm prep chores.  I got groceries, even though I didn't need anything immediately and was planning to go this weekend.  I filled up the gas tank.  I went to the ATM and got some cash.  Also got more of the special food our furry kids eat.

In case you have not been watching the weather lately, Hurricane Joaquin is out there over the Atlantic and strengthening.  The path maps are all over the place and it is too soon to tell exactly where he will hit.  It is good to be prepared.  To complicate this forecast, there is a front from the West that is currently bringing of a LOT of rain to our area.  This means that with all the current rain, when the wind increases with Joaquin no matter where he is, trees will start falling.  That leads to power lines going down.

And that is why I filled the tank and hit the ATM.  If the power goes out, the pumps and ATMs do not work!  A lot of folks don't consider that.

We have our whole house generator and are getting ready to "hunker down".  Nurse J says they are fine at their house.  They know they can come over here if they have a problem with power outage.  That's providing they can get out.  :)  During one storm years ago when our street flooded, IT Guy waded in through waist high water to check on us!

Golfer has gone to the "Y".  He is feeling better and the itchy rash is gone. We never did figure out what caused it.  The meds are working on his sore knee, too, so he's good.  Obviously there will be no golf for a while around here.

I have been busy doing all the usual things to keep the house in good shape.  We have not moved our outside things for storm prep yet.  We still have some time since Joaquin is not supposed to get around us until Sunday and Monday.  I'm hoping for a small break in the rain to do all that.

Whatever happens, we have each other, our furry kids, we have a full fridge, good books to read and a lot of new shows on the DVR!  For now it is just drizzly rain, but there is plenty more to come.

It is wet.  :)  But please note the pretty azalea blooming by the owl!  This was taken this morning.
Stay safe, people!

The Attack!

During my recent cleaning-out of things, I brought out a brand new kitty tent that has been kept in the closet since our last visit to IKEA several years ago.  I remember we bought two at the time.  The kitties pretty much wore out the first one.  So I decided to set this one up in our library.  I was quietly reading yesterday afternoon and this is what happened.

Angus is happily playing while I read.

Finnigan discovered Angus happily playing.

This was when the excitement started with much pouncing, jumping , rolling, and extreme fun.
I just finished putting the tent back together and vacuuming in there.  Have a great day and stay safe!

I'm waiting for round #2!
