Some Memories

Golfer recently found a news article about "home".  Bethlehem Township, Ohio, will be celebrating its bicentennial in 2016.  This area is in a quiet, rural area of Ohio.

I remember when the sesquicentennial of Navarre, Ohio, was celebrated in 1956.  Navarre was originally one of three towns - Navarre, Bethlehem, and Rochester.  In 1872, the three were combined into one town, Navarre.

I imagine that Bethlehem Township's Bicentennial might be similar to the sesquicentennial for Navarre.  I was  seven years old.  I remember Mom made us matching "old-time" dresses.  They were a dark rose print, with long full skirts, long sleeves, aprons, and matching bonnets.  Somewhere there is a picture of us taken in front of the house where we lived.  The only other thing I remember about the dresses was that they were hot!

There were games and a parade, and bands, and pot-luck dinners.  It was a fun time.

Navarre has changed over the years but some of the old buildings are still there.  It's still a quiet town on the river.  It was a great place to grow up.

Just Hello!

I  hope everyone had a nice holiday and didn't do anything stupid like some of the professional football players.  You'd think they were old enough to know better!

Anyway, we had a nice quiet holiday.  We don't try to go to see fireworks because of the crowds and traffic.  Besides, this year there was rain.

It's been hot and muggy here.  We've had storms several evenings.  It got to 99 and 78% humidity today.  Ick.

Golfer got out early and did the yard work.  I got to the Commissary and then did some things around the house.  All is well.

I have mentioned that we had to get a new computer.  Everything was great until about a week ago when the printer quit working.  Actually, it stopped printing from the computer.  It would still print from my phone!  Go figure!  Golfer spent some time un-installing and re-installing and talking to it, but no luck.  So we went and bought a new one.  It is awesome!  It prints from the computer, our phones, and my tablet.  It also notifies HP when we need ink and they send it.  There is a small monthly fee for that, but we figured it out and it's less expensive than us going to buy ink.  AND..... it has its own email address.  You know, for those times when we just really have to print something when we are away from home.  We just email whatever to the printer and out it comes.  Of course, that depends on if the printer is actually on!  Which might be a problem since we normally turn everything off if we're out of the house.  But still, what a feature!  Technology!  I do think that the furry kids might have issues with the printer just starting up on its own though.

The family is all well and busy.  BeyB had her Senior pictures taken this week.  Can't wait to see them!

Happy 4th of July Weekend!

It is now Thursday, the day before the "observed" holiday of Friday, July 3rd, for July 4th.  Confused?  Whether you are a purist and want the holiday observed on its actual date or just a free thinker and say bring  it on, have a great weekend!

What it boils down to is a nice three day weekend for a Summer holiday.  Enjoy!

Here is the state of things in our area.  The day before the official holiday had an early over six-mile back-up on the HRBT.  (Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel).  This in itself is not unusual.  But we know there's more to come.  Just a regular Friday brings traffic woes around here; back-ups, accidents, break-downs, idiot drivers, bridge lifts, lane closures, etc.

It is hot and around 75% humidity.  The air is very hazy.  There was a news report last evening talking about smoke that has come down from Canada.  I had not heard about the big fires up there, but their smoke caught on to the jet stream and is spread out along our coast now.  There are thunderstorms and heavy rain predicted for our area.  They make a point of saying it won't be constant, it will be hit or miss.  Makes for interesting planning.

Golfer got out and mowed the grass early this morning.  I went out and did some clean-up.  We're watching Cutie Girl this evening for a few hours.  Golfer does have some golf rounds scheduled for the weekend, but that all depends on the weather.  Anything I  have planned to cook can be done either on the grill or inside, so we're all set.

What a Long Day!

Did you survive the extra long day on June 30th?  Did you notice?  Did it wear you out?

June 30th was the day that a "leap second" was added so everything would be in sync!

All is well with the world now.  BTW - I have never heard of such a thing as a "leap second".  :)

The State of Light Bulbs Today

Have you tried to purchase a light bulb recently?  It is quite an experience.

Due to the legislation for ecological reasons, many sizes, types, and brands are no longer available.  I understand this.  Saving the Earth is a good thing.

However..... when we remodeled our bathroom several years ago, new lighting was installed.  A new fixture over each sink.  Each fixture has three bulbs.  These are clear glass, 75 watt, normal size.  And evidently these were on the "hit list" and no longer available.  Since they were installed by our contractor, I have no idea where he got them.

As I spent some time yesterday in the bulb aisle of Lowe's, I found clear bulbs of either 200 watt or 25 watt.  And those were either huge bulbs or very small, or unique shapes.  I found that many standard bulbs simply are not for sale any longer.  Newer style bulbs are more expensive.  I finally found some 75 watt, eco-friendly, higher cost bulbs.  They don't match the originals in the lighting.  But we will have to switch over as they burn out.  Sigh.  The good news is that this new one is a lot brighter than the originals.  Progress.  Time moves on.

In other news, we are doing well.  We've had some more rain.  The temperatures are creeping back up to HOT.  Life is good.
