Peaceful

This has been my view the last couple mornings.  I have breakfast, then walk over to the mini-mart to get a paper, then go sit out in the grassy area at the beach.  It is very relaxing.  Even with the baby snake I saw this morning!  A bird disturbed him and he hurried into the dune grass!

Stay safe!

Ahhhhhhhh!

Hey, all!  I'm sitting here in the sun and wind, watching some gorgeous waves!  It is beautiful!  Golfer is playing in the World Am Tournament in Myrtle Beach.  There are over 3,400 players on more than sixty courses.  Several of our friends are here also and we're all having a great time.

The week between our Ohio trip and this one was pretty busy.  I had an appointment with my orthopedic doc for the last injection in my right knee.  Now we wait to see if that is all going to help for a while.  So far, so good.  Except for the reaction I had to the last injection.  My BP dropped to 60/40 but it was only temporary.

Then I had a major dental appointment and our new dentist worked on three teeth.  That was the first dental appointment I've ever had where they said it was time to take a break and get out of the chair!  Total chair time was over two hours.  I have several more appointments set up and hopefully by the end of September will have all the dental work done and be in good shape.  Golfer goes to see him for the first time in a couple weeks.  I hope it goes well for him, too.  Everyone at this new office is very nice and friendly and helpful.  I always liked our "old" dentist that retired, but our new one is much more thorough.  Sadly, I have a mouth full of really old fillings that need attention, in addition to a few problems he found with the X-rays.

Our family is all doing well.  School will start for BeyB the day after Labor Day.  Still can't get my  head around her being a Junior!   Boxer and Bloomer are doing okay and getting into school routine there.  CutieGirl is standing and stepping on her own now!

The drive here was okay.  There was more traffic than we usually have and the restaurant where we usually stop for breakfast was super crowded.  Don't know what was going on there.  Driving through farm country I was surprised to see a lot of corn fields dried and brown.  Some were already cut down.  One farm was cutting as we drove by and they even had pumpkins sitting out by the road!  I guess time is just moving right along and Fall is almost here!

Stay safe!

A Visit "Home"

I am at a point in my life where I consider home to be wherever Golfer and I are.  And hopefully, that is also where we have our family close by.  Having said that, "home" has always been Ohio in our minds.  It's where we were both born and raised.  Ohio is a lovely state.

Golfer's career with the Air Force and then Civil Service took us all around and we were fortunate enough to live and visit many places and learn new things. We are thankful for that.  Since we have been in Virginia since 1979, Virginia is where we call "home" now.  "Home" is a state of  mind.

We just returned from Ohio, a happy occasion for this trip!  Our niece's wedding!  The last few trips to Ohio had been for sad occasions - visiting ailing family and attending funerals.  So this was a happy trip.  The wedding was lovely, the weather was great, the bride was beautiful, and we got to visit with family we hadn't seen in years!  Nurse J and Bikini were there with their families, too.

As good as all this was, and all the smiles and happy times, there was something sad about the trip.  I get emotional.  There are loved ones that have passed on that we miss.  Things that used to be there when we were growing up aren't around any more.  Too many things change.  Time moves on.

Golfer and I sort of have a routine when we are there.  We like to visit the Cleveland Indians store.  It is no longer there.  We like to go to the Brewster Dairy and buy wonderful Swiss cheese.  That store hasn't been there for years.  We have to go to the grocery store where Golfer worked as a teenager and buy our cheese.  We like to go to the Nickels Bakery store and stock up on Crème Sticks.  We were told on this trip that the bakery had stopped making Crème Sticks in January!  How totally disappointing!  I sent them an email.  :)

We drove by the farm where Golfer grew up and the trees have gotten so big that you can hardly see the house on the hill.  We went by the cemetery and paid our respects to loved ones.  And I made sure there wasn't any bird poo on my Mom's headstone.  She always made me promise to check if I was ever there.

I have my emotions in check now and life is good.  Stay safe!

Introducing . . . . . . Kirk!

Golfer and I have been busy around here lately.  I mentioned in an earlier post that we had sold our Mustang, Duke.  Then we traded our Acura TL, Hiro, in - with the money from Duke - and got an Acura MDX.  So here's Kirk!  And yes, I do know that there are some who think I'm a little "off" for naming our vehicles.  But you know what?  I have discovered that several of our friends also name theirs!  So there!  When having a discussion it just sounds so much nicer and more civil to have a name rather that say "the car".  And God knows the world can use more kindness and civility.  Add some whenever you can.

So Kirk is lovely, or handsome as the case may be.  He has lots of bells and whistles that we are learning to use.  While running an errand this week I got to hear him read an email to me!  We have checked and Golfer's clubs fit in the back perfectly.  So we're ready for a road trip whenever.

It is amazing how much paperwork is involved in a new vehicle.  By the time we dealt with the dealership, the financial man, the DMV, XM, City property department, and so on, it was exhausting.  But I think we have everything under control and in order now.

In other happenings, I just had the fourth injection in my knee.  One more to go.  Then we wait and see if this has helped.  I was told it could take six to eight weeks to reach its full effect.  As I have said, it's just something else to deal with.

We hosted a fun evening for a group of friends.  Two are in the process of moving to South Carolina.  Their old house is sold, the new one not built yet.  J & B are sort of bouncing around from place to place before their final move.  The weather was good for us and everyone had a good time.

Our family is doing well.  Boxer and Bloomer are back to school.  This is week two and all is going well.  BeyB doesn't go back until the day after Labor Day.

Better go for now.  Stay safe!

Wash Day Memories

A friend sent this to us recently and it brought back some memories.  I remember all this quite well.  I also remember using a wringer washer.  Mom and Grandma would sort, wash, run things through the wringer, and into the rinse tub, then back through the wringer. You had to be careful not to let your fingers get run through there too! Clothes pins were kept in pretty "bags" that were made to look like aprons and fit over a clothes hanger so you could hang it on the line and slide it along as you hung the wash.  If the weather was really nasty, the wet clothes had to be hauled up to the attic or just hung in the basement to dry.  And you NEVER hung your "unmentionables" where anyone could see them!

THIS IS FUNNY AND QUITE TRUE....WE ARE PROBABLY THE LAST GENERATION THAT WILL REMEMBER WHAT A CLOTHES LINE WAS....

There is one thing that's left out. We had a long wooden pole (clothes pole) that was used to push the clotheslines up so that longer items (sheets/pants/etc.) didn't brush the ground and get dirty. I can hear
my mother now....

THE BASIC RULES FOR CLOTHESLINES:
1. You had to hang the socks by the toes....NOT the top.

2. You hung pants by the BOTTOM/cuffs....NOT the waistbands.

3. You had to WASH the clothesline(s) before hanging any clothes - walk the entire length of each line with a damp cloth around the lines.

4. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always hang "whites" with "whites," and hang them first.

5. You NEVER hung a shirt by the shoulders - always by the tail! What would the neighbors think?

6. Wash day on a Monday! NEVER hang clothes on the weekend, or on Sunday, for Heaven's sake!

7. Hang the sheets and towels on the OUTSIDE lines so you could hide your "unmentionables" in the middle (perverts & busybodies, y'know!)

8. It didn't matter if it was sub-zero weather....clothes would "freeze-dry." I remember my Grandfathers union suits standing by themselves frozen. How many remember union suits?

9. ALWAYS gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left on the lines were "tacky"!

10. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item did not need two clothes pins, but shared one of the clothes pins with the next washed item.

11. Clothes off of the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes basket, and ready to be ironed. (IRONED? Well, that's a whole OTHER subject!)

And now a POEM....

A clothesline was a news forecast, to neighbors passing by
There were no secrets you could keep, when clothes were hung to dry
It also was a friendly link, for neighbors always knew
If company had stopped on by, to spend a night or two

For then you'd see the "fancy sheets", and towels upon the line;
You'd see the "company table cloths", with intricate designs.
The line announced a baby's birth, from folks who lived inside,
As brand new infant clothes were hung, so carefully with pride!

The ages of the children could, so readily be known
By watching how the sizes changed, you'd know how much they'd grown!
It also told when illness struck, as extra sheets were hung;
Then nightclothes and a bathrobe too, haphazardly were strung.

It also said, "On vacation now", when lines hung limp and bare.
It told, "We're back!" when full lines sagged, with not an inch to spare!
New folks in town were scorned upon, if wash was dingy and gray,
As neighbors carefully raised their brows, and looked the other way.

But clotheslines now are of the past, for dryers make work much less.
Now what goes on inside a home id anybody'guess!
I really miss that way of life, it was a friendly sign,
When neighbors knew each other best...by what hung on the line.
